The Modern Wedding Calligrapher

NK Bride January 9, 2024

The perfect save the date, or invitation, can really set the mood for your wedding. Do you appreciate the tradition and care that goes into a hand written invitation. The NK Bride team got the chance to talk with Caroline David of Plume & Flourish (previously Slings and Arrows Studio) about the magic of modern calligraphy.

Q: What is calligraphy’s role in the modern event world?

A: Calligraphy is a wonderful artform that binds together traditions and mediums of the past with modern art styles. Calligraphy gives us the tools we need to bridge the gap between past traditions and the present times. As well as embracing tradition in a new way, calligraphy provides a personal touch anytime it is used. It can bring a more sentimental feeling to your wedding day.

Q: How would you describe the energy behind a hand lettered invitation?

A: There’s a romance to something as personal and unique as a hand lettered invitation. It feels more intimate because every individual gets their own piece of the creation. The couples I work with, and their planners, put so much work into planning and preparing for their wedding day, and this information is transferred to me, so I can deliver the perfect reflection of the couple’s big day to the recipients. People also seem to really have a connection with something when they see their name written out. It feels specials knowing someone took the time to make that personal effort of writing out their name.

Q: How did you get your start in calligraphy? When did you begin Slings & Arrows?

A: I was an event planner at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and while in my role there I saw calligraphy first hand when planning events. I was always interested in it,but originally never saw it as anything more than a hobby. But I was really drawn to it after seeing it in person, and I found it amazing how alive it seemed. I began by practicing on my own, until some of my colleagues began to ask me to do it for them, or for events. I soon became the exclusive calligrapher for the Whitney Museum event team. This made me realize that I could do more than just make calligraphy a hobby. I left the museum in July 2019, and began Slings and Arrows Studios that September.

Q: Is there a story, or meaning behind Slings and Arrows?

A: Yes, I studied acting, so my background is in theatre. The name Slings and Arrows comes from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Specifically the to be or not to be speech. I am a lover of Shakespeare's work.

Q: You seem to be surrounded by creative interests and knowledge, how has that impacted your work?

A: I believe art is a multi-encompassing discipline. Having a theatre background has given me a more extroverted personality, helping me to communicate well with clients. I also believe that theatre has grounded me, and taught me to be more empathetic, an important characteristic when working with clients to produce work for events as emotional as weddings. Playing different characters allows you to see different sides of situations, and have a better understanding of how someone else may see things. I also feel that the collaborative aspects of theatre have allowed me to thrive when embracing other people's visions. These skills allow me to use my talents to bring my clients ideas to life.

Q: How would you recommend a couple decide on a style for their lettering? Do you have a most popular style you can recommend?

A: For couples that don’t have a clear image of what they want I can offer some standard styles. I also have pen, print, and modern script styles that I have invented myself. I am always willing to collaborate with couples who have seen the perfect idea on Pinterest. However, if I have clients who really love the work of another calligrapher, I will recommend they work with that artist. I think it’s important for our community to support each other, and be collaborative in order to give the couple the best fit for their wedding.

Q: What is involved in on-site calligraphy services?

A: On-site services are a back-up plan. It covers dinner party place cards, and last minute changes. If your cousin suddenly brings a new plus 1, I can make that place card on the spot, and eliminate any drama. We also often use this service for parties or companies who want to give out personalized items. I am also willing to travel with this service.

Q: Do you offer customized gifts, or prints that can be given to the bridal party, or other guests as gifts?

A: Absolutely, making prints is my passion project. With my love of Shakespeare and watercolor, I am looking to make home decor. But personalized gifts are totally an option. Marble coasters, our first home prints, whatever you can dream up, I would love to bring to life.

Q: Can you tell me about the custom designs and watercolors you create? How can these be incorporated into a wedding?

A: A big trend right now is watercolor crests. These wedding crests include personalized letters, and motifs from family names and heritages, and tie them together in a new way. The watercolor makes it soft and romantic, while the style can be as modern, or playful as you wish. Locations, pets, and any other signifying motifs can be included in these custom designs, and many couples end up using the crest on napkins, or invitations for an extra special touch.

Q: How long does it take to create these custom paper and ink pieces? How early do couples need to order?

A: On average your order could take 10 days to 2 weeks. Slower seasons can be quicker, but if my schedule allows. I like to have a quick turn around for my clients, but appreciate the time it takes to do it right.

Q: What do you feel separates modern calligraphy from traditional styles?

A: Traditional calligraphy styles have been around for hundreds of years, and there are tons of specific rules for these styles. Modern calligraphy is much more fluid. There is no right and wrong way to create today.  This means modern calligraphy leans more into customization, and it allows personality to shine through lettering. I enjoy the freedom of modern lettering, while appreciating the timelessness of traditional styles.

Q: What is the value of custom, hand-lettered paper goods in the digital age, what special worth does it carry?

A: There are a multitude of beautiful digital typefaces, but it is far more unique now to see lettering done by hand. It holds a higher value, not exactly in terms of money, but in priceless value. I believe everyone should have access to handmade lettering. The value lies in it’s timeless qualities, and its complete uniqueness to the occasion.

Q: How can calligraphy help to make a wedding or event cohesive?

A: When your guests first receive the save the date card, the tone for the wedding is set. Guests begin to form expectations from this point, and they will continue to learn more about your event with the invitations and RSVPs. These messages are the first indicators of the environment you are going to have on the big day. Calligraphy can help to set this tone, and anticipation builds in guests when they already feel personally invited, or touched, by a hand lettered gesture. Translating your theme into decor and overall design using calligraphy helps keep the environment cohesive.
